This was one of the first pictures taken with my new Canon 5D MKII. I had drenched my 1Ds MKIII in Acadia National Park and needed a backup. I had given my backup camera to my son quite a while ago, and figured it was time to get one. Luckily, Hunt’s Camera in Portland had one in stock. After spending a day traveling down there and back, I was able to get back on schedule.

The rain had stopped when I reached Marshall Point Light and I was really hoping for a dramatic sunrise. As Mother Nature usually proves, she is however in control. The clouds remained and I had to go with what she gave me. I would have to say that after going through my shots from the morning, the clouds actually made for some interesting images. The contrast between the grey clouds and the white of the building and the lighthouse was really accentuated. I was able to line up for this shot on the porch keeping my camera level, which kept the pillars from leaning. I like the way the porch traps your eye for a while and then the walkway leads your eye out to the light.
